“Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will.”

I’ve decided to post this because though it is just another letter from an advice column, it makes media terms like “troops”, “soldiers”, and the horribly detected “collateral damage” real and human….

Dear Prudence,
I admire the advice you give others, and I think that some of my friends and I could use it right now. I'm enrolled in a yearlong program for continuing education. Our class is small (only a dozen or so people), and in the past few months, we've become quite close. One girl, "Rita," has talked frequently about her husband, who has been stationed in Iraq since the class started. Rita and her husband have a 1-year-old and are building a house, set to be ready when he comes home. Unfortunately, he was killed recently in an accident. Understandably, Rita is shocked and devastated, as are we, her friends. We know she's not close to her family, nor is she close to his, and so—as her friends—we wanted to rally around her and let her know that we love her. However, there is the concern that we don't want to seem as though we're smothering her. As a group, we just want to give her the support she needs and still leave her room to grieve. Can you suggest some things that we can do for her that won't seem like an intrusion? Thank you.

—Grieving

Dear Grieve,
How kind you and your group sound. And your letter validates Prudie's belief that friends are the family one chooses. So many Americans are serving abroad now, and the deaths are heartbreaking. What you can do for "Rita" and her very young child is to offer emotional support—and help. Take over dinners, offer to grocery shop, propose child care if she could use some time alone ... in other words, let her know that all of you wish to help ease her burden. Be assured that kind concern is always appreciated, even at a time of profound sorrow.

—Prudie, admiringly

In Front of Your Nose

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Published: April 30, 2004

“We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield." That's from George Orwell's 1946 essay "In Front of Your Nose." It seems especially relevant right now, as we survey the wreckage of America's Iraq adventure. [Read More]

LISTEN UP!

As many of you may have noticed, I have enabled comments once again. Now, I see the number of hits I receive, so I know there are plenty of people viewing Naked & Alive, but you people don’t like commenting.

Let me tell you why I have enabled comments: the material I am posting NEEDS to be discussed. I, in my very core, believe we have become so complacent about politics/war/ethical codes that our complacency translates into approval. It is no longer enough to blame politicians or the media, or whomever else.

We must demand more from each other. We must realize as citizens it is our responsibility to uphold democracy. And when democracy fails, we must hold our leaders responsible. When are we going to stop priding ourselves as being apolitical?

And so, I ask all of you to participate…to discuss, to become active, to start demanding more of yourselves and your fellow neighbor. Perhaps you’re an American, perhaps you are not. No matter, our world is much to global to limit discussion between citizenries.

You may begin to notice some changes in Naked & Alive soon. I’ll be clearing out the archives a bit, and subject matter will focus more on current events. I urge everyone to discuss these topics. The internet and more specially, Mo’time, has provided a forum for some of the greatest strengths of democracy: the Right to Information and the Right of Free Speech.

Oh, God
"The Jesus Factor" asks what's behind the president's religious beliefs.
By Dana Stevens

"The Jesus Factor," a new Frontline documentary that premieres tonight on PBS stations across the country (check local listings for times and stations), helps to answer a question I've been asking since George W. Bush first took office. Not "Why, oh God, why?" (I reserve that one for my more private devotional moments), but, what does our president actually believe? Between his carefully scripted press conferences, his retinue of handlers, and his relatively short career in public service, George W. Bush has remained something of an ideological cipher, even as he executes policies that take our country further and further to the right. This one-hour program limits its scope to the president's personal religious convictions, asking: How much of his vaunted Christian faith springs from genuine conviction, and how much is politically expedient lip service? And more important, how has W.'s belief system affected his administration's policy decisions? [Read More on Slate]

{You can watch this program online come Saturday May 1, 2004}

Did anyone get a chance to watch this tonight? Let’s hear your reviews!

Why the Atheists are Right About the Pledge

In this country at this time, it’s a lot harder to be a non-believer than a believer

[Web Exclusive by Newsweek]

In my world—you know, the godless Eastern establishment media—I hear a minimum of personal as opposed to political God-talk, not counting the odd snide remark about my nun-sized cross, which was my grandmother’s, and her mother’s before that. “If we run into any vampires, we’re all set,” a colleague once loudly announced on a campaign plane, and I laughed, too, though maybe not all that hard.

Recently, however, I had the kind of frank talk with a non-believer that reminded me a) why these chats do not, as a rule, yield anything but bad feeling and b) why I agree with Michael Newdow, the California physician who sued to have the phrase “under God” stricken from the Pledge of Allegiance.

In Chicago the other night, I met an old school friend for a late dinner. She’s a lawyer now, with two young kids, and as we talked about our families, she said how much she envied me my faith—or as she put it, my “ability to make that leap of irrationality.” She explained that she, a non-believing Catholic, and her husband, a non-believing Jew, were trying to find a way to pass on a little trumped-up religious feeling to their children. Why? “Because that’s such a comfort for kids.”

“You’ve always been such a true believer,” she said—and at this point she actually leaned over and patted my arm. “But they’re just a bunch of stories that are supposed to make us feel better.” I believe this was the moment I began to think, “I gave up two hours of sleep for this?” And when I was reminded of a story Flannery O’Connor told on herself, as quoted in George Weigel’s beautiful new book, “Letters to a Young Catholic:’ [Read More]

U.S. Secret Service questions 15-year-old about anti-war drawings

Associate Press (4 April 2004)

Secret Service agents questioned a high school student about anti-war drawings he did for an art class, one of which depicted President George W. Bush's head on a stick.

Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading "End the war - on terrorism."

The 15-year-old boy's art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service.

"We involve the police anytime we have a concern," Prosser Superintendent Ray Tolcacher told the Tri-City Herald newspaper.

Secret Service agents interviewed the boy last Friday. The student, who was not arrested, has not been identified.

The school district disciplined him, but district officials refused to say what the punishment was. Tolcacher said the boy was not suspended.

The artwork was apparently part of an assignment to keep a notebook of drawings, according to a friend of the boy's family.

The drawing that drew the most notice showed a man in what appeared to be Middle Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He was also holding a stick with an oversize head of the president on it.

The student said the head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, said Kevin Cravens, who said he is a friend of the boy's family. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.

A message left by The Associated Press with an after-hours duty officer with the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned on Monday.

"If this 15-year-old kid in Prosser is perceived as a threat to the president, then we are living in '1984'," Cravens said.

Scalia Shows His Cards

By David J. Sirota and Christy Harvey and Judd Legum, The Progress Report
April 28, 2004

In a last ditch effort to keep the American people in the dark, Solicitor General Theodore Olson argued before the Supreme Court that the activities of Vice President Cheney's 2001 energy task force should remain completely secret. The argument has already been rejected by two federal courts. To avoid making even the most preliminary disclosures, the vice president has had to defy an explicit court order.

At issue is a relatively obscure 1972 law, the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which requires government advisory committees that have members from outside the government to meet in public. Although no formal members of Cheney's energy task force were from outside government, a 1993 federal appeals court ruling – stemming from efforts by conservatives to learn the details of then first lady Hillary Clinton's health care task force – found that outsiders who play an active role should be considered members. It is already well-known that former Enron CEO Ken Lay and other energy industry executives were involved in shaping the nation's energy policy through the task force. But Dick Cheney doesn't believe the American people have the right to know the extent of their involvement. See the amicu s brief American Progress filed with the Supreme Court about this case. Flashback

Oh my name it is nothin'

My age it means less

The country I come from

Is called the Midwest

I's taught and brought up there

The laws to abide

And that land that I live in

Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it

They tell it so well

The cavalries charged

The Indians fell

The cavalries charged

The Indians died

Oh the country was young

With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American

War had its day

And the Civil War too

Was soon laid away

And the names of the heroes

I's made to memorize

With guns in their hands

And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys

It closed out its fate

The reason for fighting

I never got straight

But I learned to accept it

Accept it with pride

For you don't count the dead

When God's on your side.

When the Second World War

Came to an end

We forgave the Germans

And we were friends

Though they murdered six million

In the ovens they fried

The Germans now too

Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians

All through my whole life

If another war starts

It's them we must fight

To hate them and fear them

To run and to hide

And accept it all bravely

With God on my side.

But now we got weapons

Of the chemical dust

If fire them we're forced to

Then fire them we must

One push of the button

And a shot the world wide

And you never ask questions

When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour

I've been thinkin' about this

That Jesus Christ

Was betrayed by a kiss

But I can't think for you

You'll have to decide

Whether Judas Iscariot

Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'

I'm weary as Hell

The confusion I'm feelin'

Ain't no tongue can tell

The words fill my head

And fall to the floor

If God's on our side

He'll stop the next war.

In May 2001 the United States gave the Taliban $43 million to promote policies against growing opium

Robert Scheer of the Los Angeles Times responded to the funding announced by Colin Powell:

“Enslave your girls and women, harbor anti-U.S. terrorists, destroy every vestige of civilization in your homeland, and the Bush administration will embrace you…All that matters is that you line up as an ally in the drug war, the only international cause that this nation still takes seriously…Never mind that Osama bin Laden still operates the leading anti-American terror operation from his bas in Afghanistan, from which, among other crimes, he launched two bloody attacks on American embassies in Africa in 1998.”

“How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but within oneself? If there is a stage at which an individual life becomes truly adult, it must be when one grasps the irony in its unfolding and accepts responsibility for a life lived in the midst of such paradox. One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.”

Condi's Inner Life
What Freudian slips do—or don't—tell us about politicians.
By Laura Kipnis

Could preternaturally self-composed National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice actually have a roiling inner life? Is she tormented by needs, longings, embarrassing fantasies? So the world wondered after New York reported what it benevolently called a "poignant faux pas" committed by Rice at a recent D.C. dinner party. What Rice reportedly said was this: "As I was telling my husb—" before abruptly breaking off and correcting herself: "As I was telling President Bush." Jaws dropped, we're told. And though nobody thinks Bush and Rice are "actually an item," we were nevertheless reminded that the unmarried Condi does regularly spend weekends with the president and first lady. [Read More]

The Orwellian Olsens (MAUREEN DOWD)

It's their reality. We just live and die in it.

In Bushworld, our troops go to war and get killed, but you never see the bodies coming home.

In Bushworld, flag-draped remains of the fallen are important to revere and show the nation, but only in political ads hawking the president's leadership against terror.

In Bushworld, we can create an exciting Iraqi democracy as long as it doesn't control its own military, pass any laws or have any power.

In Bushworld, we can win over Falluja by bulldozing it.

In Bushworld, it was worth going to war so Iraqis can express their feelings ("Down With America!") without having their tongues cut out, although we cannot yet allow them to express intemperate feelings in newspapers ("Down With America!") without shutting them down.

In Bushworld, it's fine to take $700 million that Congress provided for the war in Afghanistan and 9/11 recovery and divert it to the war in Iraq that you're insisting you're not planning.

In Bushworld, you don't consult your father, the expert in being president during a war with Iraq, but you do talk to your Higher Father, who can't talk back to warn you to get an exit strategy or chide you for using Him for political purposes.[Read More]

Ready for a draft?

[The White House advisors have been making discreet inquiries on the Hill about the Bush plan to reinstitute a universal draft in America…this in spite of the potentially deadly reactions that could blast the President out of the White House. Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld are pushing this in spite of repeated warnings, even from inside the Pentagon, that this would be political suicide. “We need this and we are going to get it” Wolfowitz said to one of our senior editors on Monday.] Link

[On January 7, Representative Charles Rangel, Democrat of New York, proposed a bill to reinstate the draft. Mr. Rangel wrote in The New York Times: “I believe that if those calling for war knew that their children were likely to be required to serve—and to be placed in harm’s way—there would be more caution and a greater willingness to work with the international community in dealing with Iraq. A renewed draft will help bring a greater appreciation of the consequences of decisions to go to war.]

[Delaware becomes the first state to enact legislation linking drivers' license applications to Selective Service registration. By October, 2002, 27 states, 2 territories, and the District of Columbia follow suit. Commenting on this trend, Virginia's Gov. [As required by law, President Bush presents "the National Military Strategy Of the United States of America." Breaking from the traditional Cold War policy of determent and containment, the document clarifies America's first strike policy and quest for global dominance. [Mike Ruppert publishes his essay "Across the Rubicon," and claims plans are underway for the reinstatement of the draft. [$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. SSS must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation.] Link

What Went Wrong?

By PAUL KRUGMAN

On April 11 of last year, just after U.S. forces took Baghdad, I warned that the Bush administration had a "pattern of conquest followed by malign neglect," and that the same was likely to happen in Iraq. I'm sorry to say those worries proved justified.

It's now widely accepted that the administration "failed dismally to prepare for the security and nation-building missions in Iraq," to quote Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies — not heretofore known as a Bush basher. Just as experts on peacekeeping predicted before the war, the invading force was grossly inadequate to maintain postwar security. And this problem was compounded by a chain of blunders: doing nothing to stop the postwar looting, disbanding the Iraqi Army, canceling local elections, appointing an interim council dominated by exiles with no political base and excluding important domestic groups.

The lesson of the last few weeks is that the occupation has never recovered from those early errors. The insurgency, which began during those early months of chaos, has spread. Iraqi security forces have walked off their jobs, or turned against us. Attacks on convoys have multiplied, major roads have been closed, and reconstruction has slowed where it hasn't stopped. Deteriorating security prevents progress, lack of progress feeds popular disillusionment, and disillusionment feeds the insurgency.

Why was it predictable that Iraq would go wrong? [Read More]

Silicio was let go yesterday for violating U.S. government and company regulations, said William Silva, president of Maytag Aircraft, the contractor that employed Silicio at Kuwait International Airport.

“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

I wish people were paying attention. I wish my little brother was paying more attention.

He’s a good kid, more aware than most his peers (I like to take some credit for that). He’ll be 21 in November and by the time a draft is in place, he’ll a prime candidate. He’s not in college, in great shape with no health issues, and no dependents. As I see it, if Bush is re-elected, it’s sending my little brother to war.

Think there’s not going to be a draft? We don’t have a choice if we stay in Iraq. If Bush is re-elected, he won’t even be held accountable by elections. And if Kerry wins, and fulfills his promise to remain in Iraq, he won’t have much of a choice either. Who in your family is venerable? Or are you or your boyfriend?

And it’s all so foolish. This war is a lie and a suicide mission. Yes, we broke Iraq and now we own it and we inherit that responsibility. Yet, no matter how many troops we send in, we will not stabilize that area without giving the Iraqis control. Instead of having Halliburton (and the many other contractors) employing Americans causing mass employment, how about we use the social capital there. We keep stealing and our soldiers keep dying.

And don’t forget this…our reservists are scattered around the globe. Our ‘weekend warriors’ intended to be HERE. They are suppose to be here to protect us…ON OUR SOIL. Think about it. If we come under attack, which is glowingly possible, who’s there to respond? The police? The fire departments? We’ll they’re incredibly understaffed because so much of that population is already serving (primarily as reservists).

And we’re safer since we attacked Iraq? What a joke.

With God on His Side...

By Robert Scheer, AlterNet
April 20, 2004

So, it was a holy war, a new crusade. No wonder George W. Bush could lie to Congress and the American public with such impunity while keeping the key members of his Cabinet in the dark. He was serving a higher power, according to Bob Woodward, who interviewed the president for a new book on the months leading up to the Iraq invasion.

Of course, as a self-described "messenger" of God who was "praying for strength to do the Lord's will," Bush was not troubled about shredding a little secular document called the U.S. Constitution.

The Constitution reserves to Congress the authority to allocate funds and to declare war. Thus, it would seem to be an impeachable offense to misappropriate $700 million that had been earmarked to restore order to Afghanistan and put it toward planning an invasion of Iraq – in a secret scheme hatched, according to Woodward, only 72 days after 9/11.

But not only has the president rejected the checks and balances installed by the nation's founders to avoid the "foreign entanglements" George Washington warned us about, he again is shown to have pursued a foreign policy that stands as a sharp rebuke to his more worldly and cautious father. I’m upset with Americans.

In 1994, with the OJ Simpson case, America’s were enthralled with the trial. Following each development; the glove, DNA, the pool boy’s testimony; American’s watched their TVs casting judgments. Or the Scott Peterson case. Or Kobe Bryant. Don’t forget Michael Jackson. We love a great trial.

And now we have the 9/11 Panel, exploring the greatest intelligence failure in American history. There’s drama: Clarke’s apology, Bush and Cheney insisting they testify together, and Condi Rice stating the PDB [Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the United States], “was just a historic document”. Each day there are new bits, new inconsistencies with testimony…these hearings are dynamic! Certainly American’s would tune in just for the drama.

But no, we’re more interested in the latest diet, SUV safety ratings, and whatever plastic surgery reality show they debuted this week. The 9/11 Commission is important. Yes, terrorists attacked the US. Yes, hindsight is 20/20. But what these hearings are demonstrating, is that our leaders dropped the ball, perhaps even deliberately.

Why was Bush, the leader of the ‘free world’, on vacation the entire month of August? Especially when chatter increased, and evidence was piling up that an attack was imminent.

On 9/11, before Bush entered an elementary school, he was told of the first hit on the towers. Then the second plane hit, and he continued to read to the kids. We were under attack and our leader is reading to 7 year-olds! Cheney maybe calling the shots , but couldn’t he try acting like a president?

Americans need to start paying attention

George Bush, Self-deluded Messiah

By David Corn, The Nation
April 19, 2004

It's hard to know what is more disturbing. That George W. Bush misled the public by stating in the months before the Iraq war that he was seriously pursuing a diplomatic resolution when he was not. That he didn't bother to ask aides to present the case against going to war. That he may have violated the U.S. Constitution by spending hundreds of millions of dollars secretly to prepare for the invasion of Iraq without notifying Congress. That he was misinformed by the CIA director about one of the most critical issues of the day and demanded no accountability. Or that he doesn't care if he got it wrong on the weapons of mass destruction. [Read More]
